During the Nara period, Japan had peaceful times with their foes, the people of Balhae, who occupied the south of Manchuria .
Two events of the Kamakura period were the Mongol invasions in 1274 and in 1281. Large Mongol forces with superior technology and weaponry tried to attack Japan in 1274 and in 1281. Fortunately, a typhoon known as kamikaze destroyed the Mongol invasion forces and saved Japan. |
