Civil War |
1498 Meio Nankaido Earthquake |
During the Heian period dissatisfaction with the government began to rise which resulted in the Hogen Rebellion from 1156 to 1158, the Heiji Rebellion in 1160, and the Gempei War from 1180 to 1185.
In 1180, fights over land, political power, and influence eventually started the Genpei War between the Taira family and Minamoto family, and a large number of smaller clans allied with either one family or the other. The Taira were defeated by the Minamoto in a naval battle at Dan-no-ura in 1185. In 1466, the Ashikaga family fought over who would be the next shogun. The argument became the Onin War from 1467-1477. The fighting mostly took place in Kyoto and much of the city was destroyed. By the end of the 15th century, authority had virtually disappeared. There was still an emperor, but he was only a figurehead and Japan was afflicted by a long series of civil wars as landowners battled for power. |
At around 8:00 am on September 20, 1498 an 8.6 M earthquake appeared of the edge of the coast of Nankai and caused a large tsunami that killed an estimated amount of about 31,000 Japanese citizens.
